Memory disorders occur when injury to certain brain regions impairs or lessens a person's capacity to store, retain, or recall memories. Currently, it is treated using pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches. Realizing that pharmacological approach is costly and has its side effects, non-pharmacological approach, particularly game-based intervention is chosen as the alternative treatment for elderly with memory disorder. Finding ways to delay or prevent the clinical onset of memory disorder is now a key priority. Although various games have been created for elderly, most of the games are not elderly friendly. This invention proposes a neuro-therapy game as a tool for game-based psychotherapy intervention for elderly with memory disorder. Prior designing and developing the game, a game design guideline consisting of 34 predetermined criteria have been produced through a thorough process of research. There 34 criteria have been are categorized into six main categories; device, interface, game features, gameplay, interaction, and reminiscence elements. Based on the criteria obtained, a mobile puzzle-based game is designed and developed in Android environment and called as Neuro-therapy game. The intention is to exercise and strengthen memory, towards preventing memory loss. Based on the guideline, tablet is recommended as a device. Reminiscence-based images are used to form puzzles in the game, which are categorized into four themes; classical, edible, face, and gallery. Self-captured images can also be used to form puzzle in the game. Bilingual which are (English and Malay) is used in the game. In addition, font type, font size and colour of the game is designed to be elderly-friendly as well. Six level of difficulties are provided in the game based on the number of puzzle pieces. The easiest level starts with 2x2 (which comprises of 4 pieces of puzzle) up to 7x7 (with 49 pieces of puzzle). To assist elderly in playing the game, hint and rewards are included. Neurotherapy game has been successfully designed, developed and tested through usability test, acceptance test, and series of experiments in a real environment involving 55 elderly showing memory disorder symptoms. Based on promising findings, we believed that our Neuro-therapy is ready to be in market. Findings from experimental validation have proven that utilizing neuro-therapy as game-based psychotherapy intervention has Improved memory recall capability. Besides memory improvements, many interesting impacts have also been discovered particularly on the improved skills and literacy among elderly. Findings also show that the proposed Neuro-therapy game is useful and easy to be used for psychotherapy purposes. This design guideline and the game itself are believed to benefit many parties; the scholars, practitioners, caretakers, and patients. The novelty of this research can be attributed to the integration of digital game and neurofeedback in psychotherapy for memory disorder patients. Our works are significant and relevant to several policies. It is aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 3 – on Good Health and Well-being, Health Facility Planning by Ministry of Health, and very significant to Pillar 2 of JKM’s Strategic Planning 2021-2025 in preparing our nation towards becoming aging society in 2030.
